# Practice voluntary discomfort to become more resilient In situations of necessity, self-control is both necessary and difficult to summon. Since we live in a world where we avoid every possible source of discomfort, we are very poorly prepared to face adversity. That is why ==**it can be beneficial to *voluntarily* let go of some comfort at times, in order to remind yourself that your current life is a luxury and to prepare yourself for harsher times**==, should they come. Stoics such as Seneca devised a few tests you can impose to yourself: 1. Avoiding an available source of pleasure without making a fuss about it; 2. Living with less for a few days; 3. Spending time alone; 4. Doing nonconform things. Doing anything that makes you uncomfortable is a great way to become mentally stronger. --- ## 📚 References [[@freedominthoughtHowBuildStrong2023]]
