# The Zettelkasten primes your knowledge for serendipity
By storing atomic pieces of knowledge which are indexed in an easily accessible way, the [[Zettelkasten]] helps you induce links between notes. As it grows in size, the number of possible connections increases exponentially, so much so that you will eventually discover relations between notes that you had not thought about before. Areas of knowledge can then emerge and be aggregated as [[Map of content|Maps of content]].
For this to work, you must not be afraid to [[Write ugly notes|write ugly notes]]. Also, pick up the habit of linking your notes by generalizing the underlying concepts. For instance, in both mechanics and electrostatics, the concept of *oscillator* applies in very similar fashions. Likewise, the concept of *reinforcement learning* applies to both artificial neural networks and habit building.
It is by getting used to linking your thinking that unexpected discoveries can emerge naturally from the apparent chaos.
