# Acquiring knowledge requires making an effort to understand
Saying "I can't understand how \[X\]", at its core, underlines either your inability or your unwillingess to embrace your opponent's point of view.
Indeed, ==**people almost always update their beliefs incrementally**== (see [[Bayes' rule — Log-odds form]]), and not through complete reversals. In order to do that, you must be willing to be exposed to new knowledge, especially coming from opposite opinions. Unless you know for certain than your opinion is the absolute truth (which is often not the case), **==you must be willing to put in the effort to understand other people's viewpoint==**. Only then may you reach a new understanding of the considered topic, and have the chance to update your beliefs.
