# 5 Steps to Stop Procrastinating, Focus & Be Productive
> A surprisingly simple process I use based on 5 concepts to consistently be productive and generate creative ideas.
1. Catch the monkey in your brain
2. Grow a new habit on top of an old one
3. Use exercise for a mini-nootropic effect
- Exercise increases BDNF
4. Take a break
- No distractions, let your brain go back to default mode
- Don't watch TV: it changes your brain waves in a way that blocks flow
5. Use the flow state cycle
1. Work through a phase of struggle where you are focusing on a challenging task
2. Release phase: take your mind off of the problem
3. Flow state: your brain releases performance-enhancing chemicals
4. Recovery phase: mini-hangover
